Huawei P20 vs P10: the differences are legion!

Last year, new technologies appeared in the mobile world. Huawei decided to follow several trends of the moment and integrated them into its new P20. The latter has several advantages over the P10 but, of course, does not have the same cost. We explain everything.

Glass or aluminum?

New generations of smartphones do not always introduce big changes to their predecessors. In the case of P20 and P10, the differences are significant: the P20 adopts a glass body, much more elegant and upscale than the aluminum of its predecessor. It's beautiful, certainly, but it attracts fingerprints and it's more fragile.

The camera module is now on the left, vertically and not horizontally. Flash, Leica signature and Leica logo are obviously at the rendezvous. Note that the body of the P20 sports a sleek design, I find it minimalist and attractive.

The P20 allows a larger display space

At the front, the screen is different from that of the P10. The display becomes FullView and saves space, the borders are reduced not only on the sides but also above and below. On the top, the notch, popularized by the iPhone X, which can house the front camera and sensors. Note that we find on both models a fingerprint reader on the lower edge, it retains on the P20 its oval design and should be ultra fast and accurate as are the readers of the brand.

The P20 uses a 5.8-inch IPS TFT screen and 18.7: 9 aspect ratio with Full-HD + 1080 x 2244 pixel resolution. The P10 has a 5.1-inch display with Full-HD definition. The screen technology is the same, the screen performance is probably the same also in terms of brightness and responsiveness. No QHD for the new flagship but it is not an essential feature for users.

The P20 offers a better user experience by offering a wider screen, and therefore better suited to the use of multimedia content, all in a compact device.

Comparison of technical characteristics
The P10 incorporates a Kirin 960 processor (2.3 GHz with ARM cores Cortex A73 and A53), accompanied by 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory, expandable through a microSD card. The Mali G71 MP8 graphics chip and Vulkan APIs provide graphics performance. It is true that prolonged gaming sessions tend to heat up the device a little but the performance offered by the P10 is good, no problem with demanding games and the transition from one application to another is fluid.

The P20 uses a latest generation processor: the Kirin 970, already known by the Mate 10. We did not have the opportunity to test the chip on the P20 but we could see it at work on the Mate 10 and the Honor View 10. This Kirin, or more exactly the NPU chip found there, allows to host the artificial intelligence in the range P. The amount of RAM remains unchanged but the internal memory increases to 128 GB, and the device remains compatible with a microSD card. We can not yet give you concrete details on the performance of the device, but the data sheet looks promising and the experience with the devices of the brand can only reassure us.

The double camera is essential

The dual camera, introduced in 2016 by the P9, is still present on the P10 and P20. It should be noted that the Pro variant has 3 sensors. On the P10 we find a 20-megapixel sensor in black and white, and a 12-megapixel color. As for the front camera, we have we have 8 megapixels with an aperture f / 1.9 equipped with Leica lenses. The camera app is easy to use and offers several modes, including the Pro which allows you to manage different options manually.

On the P20, the situation does not change that much. One of the lenses is monochrome and the other is RGB, respectively 20 megapixels and 12 megapixels and an aperture f / 1.6 and f / 1.8. However, Huawei also presents its Super Slow Motion mode. Side selfie, we move to 24 megapixels with an opening f / 2.0. Once again, we find a novelty compared to the previous generation but it will be necessary to test it more deeply to really make us an idea.

A wow effect that the P20 did not have

The Huawei P10 did not generate much enthusiasm last year. The P20, however, renews the lines of the P series, embraces a more premium design while following fashion trends. You do not like the notch of the iPhone X? No problem, you can disable it. The larger display makes sense in terms of games, photos and videos, but this does not necessarily interest all users.

Some will appreciate the glass in the back, others (the more clumsy) regret this decision. For others, the P20 offers much more than its predecessor, and it's more than a newer chip. Face recognition, screen format, artificial intelligence, a 3400 mAh battery (200 mAh greater than that of the P10), twice the internal memory and the latest version of Android and EMUI. The P10 is receiving the update Oreo and EMUI 8.0 these days.

The difference in price between the two is considerable: 679 euros for the P20, nearly 400 euros for the P10. We will have to perform all the tests on the camera, artificial intelligence, autonomy (which hopefully will be better) to see if this price is justified.
